If you are a teacher checking on your students’ essays, it helps to compare their previous essays with their current ones. As you have already encountered their previous outputs, then you may already have your own assumptions as to your students’ level of command on English writing. Observe the writing style, which includes grammar, the level of insight, clarity, etc. If there is inconsistency among these elements in relation to the student’s command on English, then it could mean that student plagiarized the more recent essay.

Use a Search Engine

Having suspected your student for plagiarizing, use the search engine (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Safari) to find similar results on sentences or paragraphs you suspect as plagiarized. The search engine will return similar results from contents being copied verbatim or fairly closely, thus confirming plagiarism.

Utilize a Plagiarism Checker

There are plagiarism softwares available all over the World Wide Web you can use to check for plagiarism. Plagiarism checker such as Turnitin and Copyleaks can help you with this. All you have to do is to copy and paste the text in a plagiarism checker and the program will run to find text matches on the Internet.

Summing it up, anyone should be vigilant in suspecting plagiarism through inconsistency of style. The use of a search engine and/or a plagiarism checker can make it easier to confirm plagiarism with just one click. Plagiarism is a form of stealing and must not be tolerated. Institutions must maintain the integrity of their contributions by checking them for plagiarism.
